Blank Slate Kitchen Sauces, Sichuan Chili Oil | Zhug Herby Hot Sauce

$14.00

Zhug is a bright, herby, spicy and versatile condiment originally from Yemen and popular throughout the Middle East. A blend of chopped jalapenos, cilantro, parsley, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil, and seasoned with salt, black pepper, cumin and cardamom, if you’re not familiar with it yet, you could think of it as a Middle Eastern chimichurri. This general purpose condiment has a bold, spicy flavor that is both hot and tangy, aromatic and herbaceous and brings a savory, rich punch to anything you put it on.

You can use your Zhug as a condiment on almost anything. It is particularly well-suited for Middle Eastern foods such as shawarma, falafel, hummus, and grilled lamb. It is also great on any savory Western dishes as well, such as fish, chicken, beef, as a dip by itself or mixed with yogurt or mayo, as a sandwich spread, or as a marinade.

Tantalizingly tingly, complex, nuanced, exquisitely balanced and of course spicy! Our Sichuan Chili Oil is infused with a dozen spices and aromatics as well as two types of ground chilis and freshly ground Sichuan peppercorns, creating layers and layers of flavor, not just heat. The flavor concept of "ma la", common in Szechuan cuisine, is named for the Chinese characters for "numbing" and "spicy". Sichuan peppercorns provide a tingly numbness on the tongue that accents the hot chilis. With a medium heat level this Szechuan sauce is meant to be used generously.

Made domestically in small batches, they use all only premium real food ingredients, all non-GMO and no sugar, preservatives or additives. Vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free and dairy-free.

• Try it on dumplings, wontons, stir fry, noodles, pizza, roast vegetables, ramen, or anywhere you would use hot sauce!

• As featured by the New York Times, Food & Wine, Forbes, Andrew Zimmern, Ruth Reichl, and more!
